There are two main reasons 1) to spy on you and sell your data. And 2) to steal ("repossess") your car in case they want to sell it to someone else.

It's criminal. At the very least it's Criminal Mischief and Invasion of Privacy. But there's also a case for Fraud, Stalking, Criminal Trespass, Unlawful Electronic Surveillance, and more.

Umm, so what? Not sure about Toyota but Hyundai has a _free for couple years, and then pay for continue_ SERVICE, which includes vehicle tracking. Seems designed for people with teenagers. I know my car can DO THAT, so if my Mehh/mid-priced vehicle CAN, everyone else must match the FEATURE or fall behind Is there a problem here, or an opportunity for the manucturer to charge an after-market service fee, which can easily be declined? There's STALKING, and then there's poneying up $30 of CHIP kit hoping it'll be used to SCHILL SERVICES in the future- not a crime

they know you have no lojack, so they install a tracker, sell the frequency of that tracker to cartels and eventually steal your car. It's not toyota, or even the dealership, it's scumbags who work at the dealerships with a criminal side hustle.

I've been to one Toyota dealer in my life and I walked out. We got a young trainee as our salesperson. It was a sh*tshow.

Very, Very interesting videos you put up on this situation. Much Appreciated!! My daughter works at a used car place that essentially finances high risk customers…poor credit scores. And they put a GPS tracker on all the cars. But!!! They disclose that up front to the customer. And it solely for repossession purposes. Again these are bad credit individuals. However, in your case this is extremely disturbing! I hope you win the lawsuit! Dealerships like this have no reason to do this. Once they sell the car it belongs to the bank. So it becomes the banks responsibility to deal with a repossession. UNLESS…they are getting a kickback from the bank to do it! And, if they don’t disclose it….thats pretty damn nefarious if you ask me. I hope you have legal recourse. Keep us posted.

they did the same thing to my Honda Accord.

We recently bought a used car from a dealer out of town ... paid cash. They were apologizing up front with the fact that they offer to install a Lojack with every purchase. The reason they were apologizing was that they were out of the units. The area we were in was a know area for high auto theft. So not every dealer is trying to sneak one in.

Dealership puts that on any buyer that has a bad paying history so they can turn off the vehicle if you miss payment

For what it is worth, I worked in the car industry for years and briefly for a dealership chain that installed an engine imobilizer device in EVERY car they PDI'd and would add it as an addendum to the monroney. The device was significantly marked up and was bypassed if you refused to buy it. The sales staff would climb under the dash before delivery and jumpter out the box. So dealerships absolutely install this stuff with a hope that you will buy it. They buy in such quanties and charge such inflated prices that they really only need to sell about 30% of customer's to turn a profit.

I work in aviation, a long time ago there was a huge Narco (DEA) effort to go after aircraft used to smuggle drugs (see "American Made" for an semi-real look at that) and what they did was, you guessed, was install trackers into aircraft (radio, not cell). The bozos who installed it sometimes did a dangerous install too, and it was the aircraft mechanics (AMP's) who would often find it and often ripped it out not just because it was dangerous, but per the FAA super illegal (not counting a few other federal laws)! Unfortunately some mechanics and/or maintenance shops chose to not touch it (at time DEA was more like the mafia) but might have told the pilots. I am pretty sure it ended a few years later, and today there are plenty of other ways to track an aircraft. As you guess I am suggesting maybe this is some DEA attempt to track you, because you had cash to buy the Corolla. Like, how can anyone buy a car in today's economy, in cash, right? Right?? (Kidding, some people manage their money right!)

It is the dealership installing however it was your credit union or who you used said to put it on as a high risk customer.

Looks like you stumbled onto a car theft ring which tags cars to steal later. The FBI could be interested in the GPS tracker and the sim card. They could put the tracker in a bait car. The dealership needs to figure out which side they want to be on. Find another dealership. In a perfect world whoever there responsible would be looking for another job. The Mercedes dealership GM told me decades ago they had an employee who attempted quite a bit of identity theft after harvesting all those loan apps. A good dealership doesn't like it when customers have to deal with bad actors under their roof.

This happened to me also with another brand car, that was paid off at delivery. When I questioned them why I was told that my credit rating was so low they wanted to keep track of the car to insure payment, BUT IT WAS PAID FOR IN CASHIERS CHECK WHEN I TOOK DELIVERY! They took off the GPS and tried to sweep it under the rug. No such luck I told everyone I could find that bought a car from that dealership about this trackers. From what I know there were a few others who were being tracked.

I have a theory. As you may be aware, there is a rush to map roadways for self driving cars. All of the major automakers are using telemetry devices to collect as much road data as possible to both target drivers use habits, and to make better self driving cars. It addition, there are many third party companies that are gathering the same data. It could be that the dealership is partnered with one of these companies in an attempt to make an additional revenue stream...and most Texans I know wouldn't willingly let an unknown company track their movements. So that is my theory.

I work at a Toyota dealership. We don't install anything like this on any of our vehicles. Finance or Cash and we definitely don't agree with these. New Toyotas already come with built in telemetry form the factory. These GPS add ons are interfering with what is already there and that's what's messing with the connection with any OBD II Scan tools. Basically two different languages trying to talk over each other to gain dominance and this in turn is causing a constant draw on the battery which is probably why you're battery died so soon. We take these off with any cars that comes through our shop from a different dealership.

They are tracking everything now. Don't buy a new or newer car.

If a dealership puts a gps tracker in the vehicle it is in your finance contract paperwork in the fine print if you miss a certain number of payments they legally can ping the vehicle and repossess the vehicle so technically you have broken the terms of your contract

I just checked my 4Runner, CLEAR! However my wife's Lexus is in the Toyota Dealership this very minute and if her car has one of these in it when we pick it up, Toyota had better Damn well have some Gangster Top End Lawyers and be willing to spend copious amounts of Money! Chicago may well be truly fucked up now with the criminals who have usurped our governmental bodies, It is still Chicago and actions such as these only get Fried here in the Courts of Law!

This sort of thing should absolutely be illegal as it is full on sabotage of a product that they are selling. I had something very similar in my own toyota Corolla. Had to do a ton of work to remove the darned leech. And the best part? They NEVER tell you about it.

Anthony you have done an excellent job of giving us some important information. In addition to your information please let me add this two items. 1. Law Enforcement could have access to this with a warrant. 2. Border Patrol that finds smuggled drugs into the USA has found trackers in many of those vehicles and it raises thier suspision as a item being used by drug cartels. So if the dealership has put the trackers into vehicles the person crossing the border is suspected of being a drug mule. Just my 2 cents from a 39 year LE person.

These are put on before they get to the dealerships by the fed govT surveillance state.

I work at a Toyota dealership. While we do not install these, and definitely wouldn't advocate the installation of one, the GR already has that built in from the factory. These GPS ad-ons are tapping into what is already there, and that's what is screwing with the connection. Essentially, they're saying the same thing in 2 different languages and trying to talk over each other to gain dominance in the conversation. This, in turn, is screwing the computer. This is then causing OBD function errors and a consistent draw on the battery.

This is crazy for me because we found that EXACT tracker in our 2022 Hyundai Veloster N. we've since removed ours as well.

Have the mechanic quote you a price from removal & then bill them just as they would you. If they don't file a suit in small claims court. To safely remove that has to cost $60-$150

Thanks for clarifying about the battery. I AM a car guy, but am more likely to be messing around with a Studebaker than anything modern, and had never heard of a battery like that.

Also didn't America instate a law, that states that any Private Person, or Company owned Vehicles, that it is illegal to have a GPS Tracker on the vehicle unless the Company or Private Person has Approved of the installation? If the car has it pre-installed, then it should be removed before handing it over to my knowledge.
